20 and 10 in 2010: The Good and the Bad on ‘Supernatural’
The Bad #10: Less Cas in Season 6
I understand that the show dropped the Heaven and Hell dynamic with Lucifer in the cage, but the unintentional victim of that move is Castiel. He was all over season 5, but he’s been largely absent from the new season, appearing in just four of the first 11 episodes. That’s not nearly enough Misha Collins for me.
The Bad #9: “All Dogs Go to Heaven”
After the show brilliantly introduced Crowley as the mastermind of Sam’s resurrection, Supernatural went awry with, in my opinion, the worst episode of the show from 2010. It was kind of dull as the boys investigated the skinwalkers and it lacked the forward momentum and hilarity of the rest of the season.
The Bad #8: Moving to Friday Nights
Honestly, I’ll watch Supernatural no matter when it’s on, but as someone who’s job is to write about the show, having to work late every Friday night is personally inconvenient.
The Bad #7: Lisa Breaking Up with Dean
Lisa was the best thing that ever happened to Dean, a strong female character who loved him and understood the demands of his job. More importantly, she was a woman the fans didn’t hate, something very rare. So having her break up with Dean just eliminated someone who could’ve stuck around for the long haul.
The Bad #6: Lucifer’s Make-Up
Sure, the vessel Lucifer was using was decaying, but after all the impressive gross-outs the show has done, I expected a lot more than the rather lame make-up job the show did on Mark Pellegrino.
The Bad #5: The Death of Gabriel
I know the show needed to prove how bad Lucifer was by having him kill someone with real power, but did it have to be Gabriel? The Trickster episodes are some of my all-time favorites (“Mystery Spot" and “Changing Channels" are certainly in my top 10), so killing him was a very bad move in my mind.
The Bad #4: Dean’s Missing Necklace
In season 5 Dean became frustrated with Sam and threw away his amulet necklace, which was almost as much a part of the show as the Impala. But what happened to it? It was supposed to be able to locate God, yet now it’s presumably in a trash heap somewhere.
The Bad #3: What Happened to Chuck?
His sudden disappearance in the season 5 finale led most people to assume that Chuck was actually God all along, but without any explanation since then, it’s this open question that still nags at the back of my mind.
The Bad #2: Azazel Didn’t Kill Jessica
I hate retcon (retroactive continuity), so when Brady showed up and revealed that he was the one who actually killed Jessica on behalf of Azazel, it took away so much of what made the first two seasons great.
The Bad #1: No “Road So Far” to Start Season 6
While the show hasn’t changed that much without Eric Kripke at the helm, the most disappointing thing is that season 6 didn’t start with the traditional “Road So Far" montage, coupled with a classic rock song. Instead, we just got a brief recap of the season 5 finale. Let’s just hope it returns for the season 6 finale.
The Good #20: Jensen Ackles the Director
For the first time star Jensen Ackles went behind the camera to direct “Weekend at Bobby’s," and he proved that he’s no slouch, delivering my favorite episode of the year.
The Good #19: Cupid’s Hug
There are few things more enjoyable to watch than a fat man in a diaper giving Dean and Cas massive bear hugs.
The Good #18: Michael’s Introduction
Throughout season 5 we heard about the archangel Michael, so his arrival in the past taking over the body of John Winchester (and then killing Anna) was the best way to introduce the character.
The Good #17: The Ghostfacers Web Series
Some people hate them, but I love the Ghostfacers, so 2010 was a great year because they got their own web series and even interrupted an episode of Supernatural to promote it.
The Good #16: Gabriel’s Porno Film
Even in death, the angel formerly known as the Trickster was a delight, as in this over-the-top porno spoof where he informed the brothers about using the Four Horsemen’s rings to put Lucifer back in the cage.
The Good #15: Soulless Sam
For the first half of season 6, Sam was going around without a soul, and even though it made him cold and unemotional, he was funnier and more bad-ass than ever.
The Good #14: Pamela Barnes and Ash in Heaven’s Roadhouse
This little glimpse of Heaven was very satisfying as we got to see two of the most memorable dead characters from the show who were every bit as cool as they originally were.
The Good #13: Sebastian Roche as Balthazar
The show may have a very small main cast, but the recurring characters are so strong that it’s OK. Roche came on board in season 6 as the playboy angel Balthazar and has been phenomenal.
The Good #12: Shirtless Sam and the Prostitute
To the show’s credit, it rarely capitalizes on the fact that its stars are ridiculously hot, but when it does, such as in this scene of Sam working out without a shirt, it’s something to celebrate.
The Good #11: The Winchester Family Reunion
When Sam and Dean traveled back in time they met their parents, Mary and John, and seeing the four Winchesters together for the first time in the series was very emotionally gratifying.
The Good #10: The X-Files Opening Title Sequence
Even though aliens weren’t really behind the abductions, the show’s homage to The X-Files with a perfect new opening title sequence was worth it.
The Good #9: Cas Watching Porn
There’s always great comedy from Castiel’s attempts to understand the world, and when he watched a porno film with Sam and Dean in the room doing research, it was the best kind of comedy the show can do.
The Good #8: The Title of “Live Free or Twi-Hard”
This wasn’t my favorite episode of the year, but the title is perhaps the most perfect and hilarious pun I’ve ever seen.
The Good #7: New Showrunner Sera Gamble
For five seasons fans lived by the mantra “In Kripke We Trust," referring to creator and showrunner Eric Kripke. When he stepped down there was fear that Supernatural wouldn’t be the same, but Sera Gamble has flawlessly taken over and kept the show more than just OK.
The Good #6: Dean Killing Zachariah
The 100th episode needed a big, awesome moment, and Dean finally killing Zachariah was it.
The Good #5: The Alphas
The introduction of these original creatures and the mystery of where they came from is one of the most exciting new storylines for season 6.
The Good #4: "O Death"
Julian Richings was delightfully sinister as Death, and combined with the chilling promos when he first appeared using the song “O Death," the fourth horseman was definitely the best.
The Good #3: Bobby’s “Help Me For Once” Speech
Bobby is always helping Sam and Dean out of a jam, so in “Weekend at Bobby’s" when he finally let loose on their selfish ways and demanded that they help him, it was a dramatic, hilarious and perfect monologue.
The Good #2: Sam Seeing the Impala in the Season 5 Finale
Fans always knew the Impala was important, but the backstory of the car as told by Chuck Shurley in the season 5 finale combined with the montage of brotherly moments it inspired when a glimmer of the Impala caught Sam’s eye made it the most important automobile in the history of the world.
The Good #1: Mark Sheppard as Crowley
Sheppard was a perfect fit to the series as the hilariously evil demon Crowley, and the decision to give this character a major role through the end of season 5 and the start of season 6 was the best move the show made all year.
