he heard the piercing screech of tires.
Roz turned in time to see a dark sports car come
squealing up the driveway toward Crumpet. The bulldog
cocked his head at the noise, but was clearly too tired to
move quickly. A scream rose in her throat, and her legs
began to move as she raced toward the dog. She felt Jamie
brush past her, his legs pumping incredibly fast, then she saw
him dive for Crumpet.
He caught the bulldog in the chest, and both he and the
dog went crashing into the bougainvillea bushes that lined the
wide drive. The car slammed into the back of Roz's car,
metal grinding against metal with a sickening sound.
A dark-haired man got out of the sports car and began to
run back down the driveway. Without thinking, anger
bubbling up inside her, Roz began to race after the man.
She was halfway down the drive when the man turned,
and she saw the gun in his hand…
